Consumer Electronics Show And Basepaws

Your first question might be, “This is a cat blog, why are you writing an article about the Consumer Electronics Show”? The Consumer Electronics Show is happening right now in Las Vegas. It’s on my bucket list to attend because I’m a self-admitted “techie”. But that’s not the reason for the post. I received alerts about a new product release and couldn’t wait to share it with you.

Basepaws – Genetic Testing For Your Cat

I’m sure you’ve heard of 23andMe where you can send in a saliva sample and learn more about your genetic history.

This is also on my to do list, someday. But before I do that, I might have it done for some of my kitties. Basepaws unveiled their Cat DNA Kit at CES 2019.

The goal of Basepaws is to build a database of cat DNA to help identify genetic markers to assist in the care and well-being of your cat.

How It Works

Once you order and receive your kit, you collect the sample. The sample is collected by sending in some of your cat’s hair by using the supplied adhesives. You can also send in a swab of their cheek (if they are hairless). It is sent back to the company in a prepaid envelope for analysis.

Once your sample is received it will be tested and a detailed report will be written about your cat. As the database grows, more information will be included in this report. Some items included in the report (as of this post) are:

  1. Your Cats Breed Index -Is it related to any breeds already in the database or is it Domestic (untested breed).
  2. Your Cats Wild Cat Index – Explains which wild cat your cat is related to.
  3. Identification of any abnormality in a few of your cat’s genes. (Mentioned on their website but not on the report example page).

What Is Interesting And What I Like About It

Because this is a brand new company and they are adding new cat DNA every day, the database will continue to grow. You will continue to get updated information about your cat’s DNA as Basepaws learns more about your cat and it’s breed.

Ongoing Benefits

This point is the most interesting to me. If you purchase now you will receive lifetime updates on your cats DNA as the company receives more samples and can make more comparisons to other cats. You will also receive articles on topics of interest based on your cats DNA and down the road, discounts on products that will be created for your cat’s basic genetic needs.

In the future, they plan to give you more comprehensive information about your cats breed and the genetic likelihood of diseases that your cat might contract.

How Much Does It Cost?

Right now the cost for the test is $95 and you will receive a report that will contain (at this point) what I mentioned earlier in this article (your cat breed index and wild cat index).

According to their website, the cost will increase in the future as more tests get added, so if you purchase now, any upgrades will be included.

I would love to order one of these kits right now, especially for Magic who has some genetic kidney issues. I would be interested to see if there is anything we could find out that would help to extend his life.

Here is a link of the press release announcing Basepaws being at CES.

What are your thoughts on cat DNA testing? It might not be for you, but if your kitty has some sort of medical issue, I think it could be an important tool in helping to keep your kitty healthy.

  1. Interesting post , I never really thought much about the benefits of having your pets DNA tested but you have opened my mind to it . Basepaws looks like a great opportunity to do this through . Just wondering if Basepaws is specifically for cats or can you have other 4 legged pets tested as well? Also is this DNA testing available in most countries  as I  live in Canada ?

Thanks for stopping by. Basepaws is specifically for kitties. I just did a quick google search and there are dog DNA kits available with some other companies.

According to Basepaws, you can send the DNA internationally but there is a $15 shipping fee. In the US the shipping is included.

  4. I’m not a cat person (the only cat I ever owned ran away) as cats hate me. I own two dogs and I’ve never thought about getting DNA tests for them. This article definitely gives me some inspiration to do some DNA testing in the future for my dogs.

    P.S. Your cat is adorable.
