Best Multiple Cat Litter Box

Thanks for reading my articles about litter boxes. If you missed them, I wrote some reviews about the Cat Genie, the PetSafe Litter Box, and Purina’s BREEZE Litter Box Solution. I have used all of these solutions and like each of them for different reasons.

However, because of our Oreo (who was sensitive to smells), we had to go with a traditional litter box set up.  PetSafe and Breeze are better for single cat households, but we needed a solution and needed to find the best multiple cat litter box out there. In my opinion, now that we have nine cats, we needed a solution that can handle our multiple cats but I didn’t want to feel like I had to scoop every five minutes.

The Rule Of Thumb

Because we have Oreo with his sensitive nose, we had to go back to traditional litter boxes. However, with eight cats (at the time) we should have had nine litter boxes. The rule of thumb is you should have one more litter box than the number of cats you own. No one really has room for that many litter boxes. So we were at a crossroads trying to figure out what we should do. Then it came to us!

It’s Simple

Most of you have probably moved at some point in your life or you needed to store some things away in a closet or attic. I know I had a lot of those big plastic storage containers. We looked at those and thought, that will work exactly for what we need and will take up less space.

I consider each container to be the size of two and a half litter boxes. We have four of these throughout our house. That’s 10 litter boxes but only four containers!

Pros

  1. They are durable because they are used for moving so the kitties really can’t destroy them.
  2. The clean up easily because they are made to use used over and over
  3. Because they are large, if you have a kitty that likes to “overshoot” the litter box when they use it, you won’t have that problem with this product.

Cons

  1. They are not the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye. (But if they are in a laundry room, no visitors will really see them).
  2. If you have an elderly cat you might need to put a step in front of the box because it is quite high to get into the container.
  3. You will need to replace them eventually because of the smell, however, you can extend the life if you clean them regularly. (It’s nice to have a couple extra boxes so you can clean and let them dry).

Final Thoughts….

I prefer the Cat Genie (check out my review here), but if you are on a budget and have a multiple cat household (and have the space) using Sterilite Containers would be a great and cost effective alternative.

I hope you enjoyed my articles on litter boxes.

  1. Hello there, thanks, for dropping your article once again about Best Multiple Cat Litter Box.  I read about the article you dropped on cat genie. Am not planning on having more cats and even the budget to get the other box you suggested is not really available now, so I think I will still stay with my cat genie since it’s still serving me

    1. Thanks for stopping by again. Glad you liked my Cat Genie article as well. I hope to start using it again.

  2. Thanks for sharing another problem solving post.Your articles are always helping with general problems with cats. My cat is pregnant and I have been trying to figure out a good litter box for he and the incoming kittens and my other cat. I am glad I came across your post. Plastic containers are a great idea. Thanks for the insight

  3. Nice article about cats litter box. I’m planning to get a cat so I guess I am more than lucky to be here. I did a little browsing on your website and it is really impressive how good your and informative your articles about cats are. You are doing a good job, Keep up the good work. Since I’ve never gotten my cat, I wanted to ask, what kind of food are recommended for kittens within their first 3weeks?

    1. Thanks for stopping by and I’m glad that you are finding my articles interesting.

If you get a tiny kitten they should be fed formula up to 3 weeks old. I found a great article that explains a feeding schedule.

Thank you for the idea, I might write an article about that in the future. 🙂 Appreciate your comment!

  4. Awesome article Nancy. Your hobby of cat is similar to my little sister, she loves cats a lot. And her birthday is coming up next month. I’m considering both of your products, that you’ve suggested.

Better I should ask her, which container she would like to have instead of giving surprise gift🙂 Your analysis is complete and insightful. I’m thinking of taking genie, but still I’ll share your website link to her, for better decision.

Thanks a lot for sharing this article. I’m glad that I found it before my sister’s birthday.

    1. I appreciate your kind words about my articles and glad that you found them helpful.

Probably a good idea to ask your sister which litter box she would like. Please wish her a happy birthday! 🙂

      Thanks for your comment!

  5. Our cat used to always over shoot the mark when scratching around in her litter so we always had mess everywhere. This product looks good because of the high edges, so hopefully would prevent mess. We actually gave up on our litter and she is an outdoor cat, who only really comes inside at night where she sleeps in the garage. This has occasionally resulted in the odd mess in the garage for us to clean up, but rarely. However, she is now 8 years old, and I am guessing as she gets older there may be once again a need for a kitty litter. I will keep this one in mind.

    1. Thanks Liz for stopping by. One of our kitties lifts up her behind when she goes and overshoots the litter box. Now with these containers it doesn’t happen. Whew!

  6. This is a wonderful post about best multiple cat litter box from Nancy’s cat corner. It is quite an expository topic as I have learnt a few things such as the rule of thumb which says you should have one more litter box than the actual number of cats available. An added advantage of being durable since they are used to move the cats from place to place. Cheers.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I didn’t know about the litter box rule until I got my first cat. I like these containers because it’s like having two and half litter boxes in one space.

  7. Thanks for your review on best multiple litter box. I have been following your articles lately and its been appreciated. I don’t have cats but I have a cousin that owns about 2 to 3. Reading through the pros and cons I think is not really bad. I will suggest this to my cousin. You are doing a good job.

    1. Thank you for checking out my articles. I really appreciate it. Thanks for sharing my information with your cousin.

  8. I think this is a creative idea and I looked at the cons of this idea and I think it is still OK. I did not really know about the rule of thumb on having one extra little box. I would definitely keep that in mind. Although this is a good idea and I can definitely see it working but I think I would still go for the Cat Genie because I have read the review and I think I like what I actually read.

    1. Thanks Jay for stopping by. I agree with you the Cat Genie is my first choice, but for multiple cats, this this is a simple budget friendly option.

      I appreciate your comment!

  9. Nice article you post there on best multiple cat litter box. And it so full of information about the litter box.

I only have one cat at home for now but later in the middle of the year I wish to get some other one. I will look at some of your recommendations to learn the best one to use because I don’t want a multiple cat litter box that smells. I like it can be movable.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad that you found my information helpful.

You have a few options to choose from. Let me know which one you choose.

  10. Okay cool. Very resourceful of you. I live with cats now. Not mine though but my uncles. Two kitties with too much energy and mess up the whole place. I didn’t meet any litter though. My uncle has kinda helped them adapt to using newspaper spread on the floor. But now ive seen your article, I’ll definitely get one of these. Thanks

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad that you like the article and it gave you a great idea.

I’ll be doing an article about kitty litter in the future as well.

  11. The best cat litter boxes cool as is durable and can easily be cleaned and carried about and that’s the durability. The pros aren’t too expensive but attainable likewise the cons. One thing that does not really please me much about cat litter boxes is the aesthetics. I like something that is attractive and looking beautiful.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I do like that the container because it is not that expensive, but some people do not like the “look” of the container. If you can put it in a back room that many people can’t see then it isn’t as much of a concern. However, it it’s in plain sight, I agree with you, it’s not pleasing to the eye.

  12. Hello Nancy:

Your blog was interesting and cute. It brought a smile to my face seeing your little kitten getting a bath and your other cat Houdini playing in a water dish. When I was a young boy my Mother started raising pure bred Burmese cats. She would have two studs she would keep in floor to ceiling cages. Once or twice a day she would put these little Bitches britches on them with a miniature diaper on them to come out and play. I used to go with her to the cat shows in California and the area. I would help out in the judges ring as a steward. We would clean the cages and see all the different breeds. A lot of fun and a lot of work. I am still an animal lover, just went with dogs.

We have a half breed boarder collie and a half breed Dachshund mix. the dashshund is my baby. she will try to tear your head off if you try to mess with me when I hold her.

Let me get back to your blog. It is very well written and had plenty of good content. Those short videos are really awesome. I would add more as you go along that gets to peoples heart strings.

For litter box odor you might want to consider a review on Ozium. You hardly spray anything at all and it cuts the ammonia smell. I think Walmart even carries it.

Again Nancy great blog keep it up.

    Thank you,

    Brian E.

    1. Brian,

Thank you for stopping by. I bought my Mom a miniature dachshund when I went to college. He was a sweet dog. However, as I got older, I changed over to cats. 🙂

Going to the cat shows sounds like fun. I would like to attend one, but my kitties would never be in it because they are all strays.

I plan on adding more videos when the kitties do something cute. I know, myself, my heart melts when I see cute cat videos. LOL

Thanks for the tip. I will do some research on Ozium. I haven’t heard of it before.

  13. Hello Nancy,Thanks for your useful tips on cat litter boxes. We do not have as many cats. However, ours is somewhat willfully and depending on her mood and the weather, she chooses to be seasonal in a particular part of the house, so it is good to have these options of many different boxes around. At some point, she chose the garden as a bathroom using the sand from the plants directly, but by putting a litter box nearby, he returned to his good habits, lol.

    1. Hey Tommy,

Thanks for stopping by. I have a funny story about using sand from plants for a bathroom. One of our indoor kitties right after we got him (as a kitten) squatted right in a plant and used it as a litter box. I just had to laugh because he was so little and determined to use it. LOL

It was just a one time thing and he’s used the litter box ever since.
